Is your hormonal contraception causing health problems?

In this month’s blog, I want to share with you some reasons why your hormonal contraception could be causing your depression and other health problems.

We are emotional beings, emotions run through us like electricity runs through a live wire. Some of us find ways of processing these emotions, of embracing them, and some of us feel like we’ve been hit by a truck.

Whatever your level of dealing with your emotions we all have times when we find it difficult to cope with them and feel like they are overloading our system, overwhelming us.

The possible cause

During some recent research, I discovered how much our nation's hormonal contraceptive methods actually affect our moods, and even personalities, turning us into emotional time bombs!

Hormonal contraceptives can be administered via several mediums. When I mention the Pill I'm also referring to other methods like the implant, injections, hormone releasing IUD, the patch, etc.

There are different reasons why women and girls take the Pill; the obvious one is contraception but it is also prescribed for skin conditions such as acne, excessively heavy periods, period pain or PMS.

Your body’s natural systems

Your body produces hormones to regulate all your body's functions such as growth, temperature, reproduction, digestion, the chemical levels in your blood, stress levels and coping mechanisms, sleep cycles and more. Your endocrine system is a delicate and very powerful system and only requires minute quantities of these powerful hormones released into the body to regulate all the different systems.

Our hormones affect our emotions, and our emotions affect our hormones as the endocrine system is one big feedback loop which is in constant communication with our bodies to keep us regulated.

The Pill – a cure for fertility!

The Pill provides a chemical or chemicals which mimic some of the natural hormones produced in the body during pregnancy, thereby inducing a biochemical state in the body closer to pregnancy than the normal fertile state.

The levels of these chemical hormones are around four times stronger than those naturally produced in the body.

If you think about how powerful the natural hormones are, imagine what an incredibly powerful effect it would have on your body to pump into it four times the natural amount.

The effectiveness of the Pill

The information leaflets which come with the Pill suggest that it's around 98% effective. This is based on laboratory conditions and perfect use. In reality, the success rate is closer to around 94%.

Side effects of the Pill

Have you been suffering from any of the following symptoms and can’t work out the cause?

  • Weight gain
  • Bloating
  • Uncontrollable appetite
  • Feeling vague and unable to concentrate
  • Feeling irritable or disconnected
  • Nausia
  • Feeling neurotic, depressed, moody, unbalanced
  • Uncontrollable crying for no apparent reason
  • Sensitive gums
  • Pain or tenderness in your calves
  • Not feeling yourself/out of sorts
  • Loss of sex drive/low libido

These are just a few of the symptoms and health issues which can be caused by the chemical hormones in the Pill.  Depression can be twice as likely to manifest in women taking the Pill than those not taking it.

The Pill can be so disruptive to our health, sending the delicate balance of our body's natural processes completely off the rails and leaving us more vulnerable to all kinds of health problems, the symptoms of which can also be masked by taking the Pill. Often women experience health issues after coming off the Pill which have manifested over prolonged periods of time, but the drug has masked the symptoms.

The seat of our inner power

Our natural menstrual cycles and our fertility is the seat of our feminine creative power. Pumping chemical hormones into it is a bit like dropping a nuclear bomb on our own power house. How can we expect to do this and still feel balanced and strong in ourselves? Not to mention the disruption to our health, our relationships and our general wellbeing.

More information

If you're concerned about the effects of this powerful drug, but are unsure of what the alternatives are, have a look at a book called The Pill, Are you sure it’s for you? by Jane Bennett & Alexandra Pope. If you're suffering from any of the above symptoms or health problems Reiki healing is a great all round healing tool which can help balance out the emotions and other health problems. There are other great therapies out there which can help so stay vigilant and keep looking for the solution. Don’t give up on yourself, you’re worth the time and effort to find your way to feeling amazing!
