How Reiki helped my journey to recovery

I wanted to share a journey with you. A journey of abuse and recovery, of being lost and finding my way, of the tools I used to get where I am today.

Have you ever had your power taken from you?

Abuse is a struggle for power.

A person’s personal power can be taken from them in several ways. It can be taken by force; or it can be taken with lies and deceit.

A person seeking power can pretend to be something they're not. They weave their way into your life and before you know it your life has become a lie; your sanity is turned on its head; you don’t know which way is up or down; nothing makes sense anymore and you find yourself spinning with the utter loss of the essence of who you were.

You're surrounded by a wall of lies. You find yourself thinking, speaking and acting the unthinkable, unspeakable and unimaginable. When you look in the mirror there is a stranger looking back. When you look for the truth you're fed more lies. When you seek the truth elsewhere there is punishment from the one who seeks to control you. All connections to the world are severed as you're plunged into isolation.

From the outside you might ask, “Why would you give someone that power over you? Life is black and white, just don’t give away your power!”

I say, “Power can be taken, without you even noticing until it is too late.”

The long road to recovery

If you're lucky enough to have escaped the insanity, recovery is a long road during which time you learn piece by piece to see where the truth is open and where it is hidden. You learn to retrieve the lost parts of your soul piece by piece and feel safe enough to re-integrate them into you.

Slowly, you build a new you. Some of the parts of yourself are left where they lay, some are found, and some are too painful to approach. Gradually you become you again; you reconnect with the lost ties slowly, carefully. Once damaged the recovery must be gentle. A damaged body responds to a gentle and focussed recovery programme; a damaged soul must be given the same care.

Next time you want to say to someone, “Why would you let someone do that to you? Just walk away, just leave,” try to pause for a minute. Think about the situation, put yourself in their shoes and walk a mile in them before you speak, think or make judgement.  You may just find your mind and heart opening a little.
